Review: Big Black Thunder Coconut

Black Thunder bars are fairly well known and are a mash up of dark cocoa cookie pieces, plain cookies pieces, rice puffs and chocolate poured into a block like bar. This version, Big Black Thunder, is larger, thinner and seems to have little to nothing in common with the original Black Thunder bars, as it is essentially a large chocolate coated biscuit. Which is fine by me, I love chocolate biscuits ^_^

We got this one as part of our November Oyatsu Box.

The bar is indeed pretty big, considering the Nendoroid figure next to it is approx. 10 cm tall. Well…

…until you get it out of the wrapper that is. What is it with these over sized wrappers? I feel lied to! >_<

Misleading wrapping aside, the bar itself looks great. I love the texture on it!

The bar is super thin, which gives it a nice snap. I’m both surprised and glad it arrived in one piece, honestly, as it’s pretty fragile.

I would compare the biscuit inside to a Nice biscuit as they are much the same in terms of sweet coconut taste and crisp texture. Nice biscuits happen to be one of my favourite biscuits, so I was pretty happy at the similarity. The coconut biscuit and creamy chocolate coating worked really well together and produced a satisfying but not too sweet biscuit snack.

On the other hand, all you’re really getting with this snack is a very overpriced Nice biscuit coated in good but generic milk chocolate. By all means, it’s delicious, but is it worth importing one when you could get a whole packet of nice biscuits AND a chocolate bar for the same price here in the UK? Maybe, maybe not. I know some people would feel they’ve paid too much through importing this. I’m not sure it’s unique enough that I’d buy one when I could add something more exotic to my basket.

Overall, we all really enjoyed this Big Black Thunder Coconut. I am critical that the arguably small size doesn’t exactly live up to the ‘BIG’ claim and all too familiar taste could mean this isn’t really worth the cost to get a hold of one for many people, though I must say if I was ever in Japan I’d definitely pick one up. I’d be happy to see it (or a different flavour variation) included in a future Oyatsu Box as well.

I’d still give this a 10/10, as despite my reservations it had everything right in terms of taste. Which is the most important thing, really 🙂
