Time for another Pokemon themed treat! Once again I’m in love with the awesome packaging before I’ve even tried the treats inside 🙂
These Pokemon Mini Doughnuts are a limited edition snack created to celebrate the 18th Pokemon movie, Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, which revolves around Hoopa (the lil purple and red guy on the box there) who is a mischievous Pokemon who happens to love anything ring shaped. Hence, ring shaped snacks!
The box is a good size, for scale the Nendoroid figure beside it is approximately 10cm tall. Which is good, because at the only place I have found them for sale in the UK right now they cost a whopping £5.99.
The packaging is just as awesome on the inside as it is on the outside, with the lid featuring a cute little drawing of Ash, Pikachu and Hoopa saying いただきます (itadakimasu-a common way of saying ‘let’s eat’, literally ‘I humbly recieve’) and the base featuring the answers to the ‘who’s that Pokemon’ game on the back of the box.
Here’s a couple of closer pictures:
I do love when there’s been lots of effort put into packaging 🙂
Here they are, the cute little donuts themselves! They are pretty powdery, I worried that maybe the chocolate had bloomed but they tasted fine. Our Crispy Shittori Choco, which are also chocolate corn snacks, arrived the same way so I think it’s normal.
The ‘doughnuts’ are made up of a crisp corn puff inner coated with a super thick layer of chocolate and topped with biscuit pieces. If you use your imagination you can almost feel like you are eating a dehydrated cake, but they are ultimately just chocolate coated corn puffs and not actually doughnuts 😉
The thick chocolate coating tastes like a good, slightly bitter dark chocolate which is offset by the sugary sweet, dense corn puff. The biscuit pieces are somewhere between a crisp biscuit and the cereal pieces that are commonplace in a lot of chocolate bars. Altogether, they make for a really satisfying mouthful with an interesting but balanced variety of textures and flavours.
Each individual doughnut is quite large, so you don’t get too many in a pack unfortunately. We definitely wished we had another pack after we very quickly demolished this one. Although, that could have been more to do with how deliciously morish they are than anything as they are very filling.
Overall, I’d give these a 10/10. They are quite expensive, but what with their Pokemon branding and limited edition status that is somewhat to be expected. You do kind of wish you had gotten a collectible sticker or something, but at least you get some awesome packaging and yummy snacks. The little doughnuts themselves are super delicious, I hope Lotte bring these out as a non limited snack as I would definitely grab them again. I’m really glad we had the chance to try these before they disappear 🙂
