Review: Pure Fruit Gummy – Salty Lychee

Pure gummies are something we’ve heard great things about, so we were really looking forward to picking them up at some point. To receive our first bag in a lychee edition, a flavour we all love, was pretty awesome!

We got ours as part of our August Oyatsu Box (see what else we got here) but you can also buy them from Oyatsu Cafe here for £1.29 a bag. According to the Oyatsu Box leaflet, these are a summer edition so if you want some I would grab them before they’re gone.

The pack is a good size and features a little heart shaped window that you can peek through to see the contents. It’s also resealable, which is always a good thing if, like us, you don’t tend to finish a whole bag of candy in one sitting.

The packet may state that the flavour is ‘Salty Litchi’, but that little window is telling us there is actually ‘sour powder’ (すっぱい パウダー) on the candies. Yum!

I don’t think ‘Litchi’ is a typo incidentally, since the scientific name for lychee is Litchi chinensis. I guess it’s a bit odd not to just print ‘lychee’, but there you go.

Opening the pack produces a cloud of beautifully sweet lychee. Much like the fruit itself these sweets are super perfumed, they smell so good!

The rather cute heart shaped sweets are roughly the same size as the window on the front of the pack. They’re quite big, but they’re flat too so there are lots of them crammed into the packet. I was surprised at just how many you get in one pack.

Mmm, look at all that salty sour powder!

I really don’t know if the powder is supposed to be both salty and sour, but that’s definitely what I tasted. The first sweet I tried was incredibly sour. Then the second was more salty than anything. The third, pretty much both in equal measure. Is it a roulette? Am I imagining things? Who knows. It’s good anyway.

The powder coating is quite thick and can take a little while to suck off. If you aren’t a fan of salty or sour flavours this may not be fun, but it’s worth it for the gummy underneath.

The lychee flavour in these is incredible. I know Pure are famed for providing high quality, strong and realistic flavours, and their lychee flavour is no different. They are a bit sweeter than a fresh lychee (at least the ones we get here in the UK) and taste more like a tinned one to me, but it’s a very realistic and delicious flavour nonetheless. I get the feeling they sweetened up the lychee flavour to balance the salty/sour coating, and really the two flavours compliment each other very well.

They’re so juicy and refreshing, if it weren’t for the firm gummy texture you’d forget you were eating a sweet as opposed to the real thing.

These are really delicious gummy sweets. The flavour is everything I like to find in a Japanese candy; strong, realistic and just a bit mind blowing. I’m glad we got these in our box as it was great to finally get to try Pure gummies, they are definitely something we’ll be on the look out for in the future.

These get a 10/10 from me 🙂
